AMARAVATI / NEW DELHI — Severe condemnations and widespread protests have erupted over the custodial torture and brutal assault of independent women journalists Shaheen Khan and Nafeesa Khan by the Delhi Police. Reports indicate that the journalists were detained, physically assaulted, and subjected to targeted hostility while actively discharging their professional reporting duties.
According to reports, both journalists were covering a public event attended by Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Tensions escalated when the reporters posed direct questions to the leaders, prompting police personnel to intervene immediately. The two journalists were subsequently taken to a police station, where they endured severe psychological harassment, identity-based discriminatory slurs, and indiscriminate physical brutality.
Nafeesa Khan, a reporter for the digital news outlet 4PM, was severely beaten with batons, rendering her semi-conscious. With extensive contusions and severe swelling extending from her neck to her thighs, she was left unable to walk unassisted. Meanwhile, independent journalist Shaheen Khan suffered grave injuries to her shoulder and limbs before losing consciousness inside police custody. The victims stated that the police escalated their violence with heightened malice upon confirming their Muslim identities.
This assault occurs against a backdrop of escalating threats to press freedom in India. Critical reportage, investigative journalism, and questioning high-ranking officials and political figures face mounting legal harassment and physical intimidation. The Andhra Pradesh Medium & Small Daily Newspapers and Periodicals Journalists Association demands an immediate, independent inquiry into the incident, the immediate suspension of and criminal prosecution against the accused police personnel, and robust institutional protection for on-ground journalists.

అమరావతి/ న్యూఢిల్లీ — స్వతంత్ర మహిళా జర్నలిస్టులు షాహీన్ ఖాన్, నఫీసా ఖాన్లను ఢిల్లీ పోలీసులు కస్టడీలోకి తీసుకుని తీవ్రంగా కొట్టి, చిత్రహింసలకు గురిచేసిన ఉదంతంపై సర్వత్రా తీవ్ర నిరసనలు, ఖండనలు వెల్లువెత్తుతున్నాయి. తమ వృత్తిపరమైన రిపోర్టింగ్ బాధ్యతలను నిర్వర్తిస్తున్న సమయంలోనే ఈ జర్నలిస్టులను అదుపులోకి తీసుకుని, భౌతిక దాడికి పాల్పడటమే కాకుండా ఉద్దేశపూర్వక విద్వేషానికి గురిచేసినట్లు వార్తలు వెలువడ్డాయి.
సమాచారం ప్రకారం.. ఢిల్లీ ముఖ్యమంత్రి రేఖా గుప్తా, కేంద్ర హోం మంత్రి అమిత్ షా పాల్గొన్న ఒక బహిరంగ కార్యక్రమాన్ని ఈ ఇద్దరు జర్నలిస్టులు కవర్ చేస్తున్నారు. ఆ నాయకులను జర్నలిస్టులు నేరుగా ప్రశ్నలు అడగడంతో ఉద్రిక్తత పెరిగింది, వెంటనే పోలీసులు రంగంలోకి దిగారు. అనంతరం ఆ ఇద్దరు రిపోర్టర్లను పోలీస్ స్టేషన్కు తరలించి, అక్కడ తీవ్ర మానసిక వేధింపులకు, మతపరమైన వివక్షాపూరిత దూషణలకు , విచక్షణారహిత భౌతిక దాడికి గురిచేశారు.
‘4PM’ డిజిటల్ న్యూస్ ఛానల్ విలేకరి నఫీసా ఖాన్ను లాఠీలతో కర్కశంగా కొట్టడంతో ఆమె అపస్మారక స్థితికి చేరుకున్నారు. మెడ నుంచి తొడల వరకు శరీరం తీవ్రంగా వాచిపోయి, కందిపోయిన స్థితిలో ఆమె సొంతంగా నడవలేని దుస్థితికి చేరుకున్నారు. మరోవైపు స్వతంత్ర జర్నలిస్ట్ షాహీన్ ఖాన్ భుజానికి, అవయవాలకు తీవ్ర గాయాలై, పోలీస్ కస్టడీలోనే స్పృహ కోల్పోయారు. తాము ముస్లింలమని నిర్ధారించుకున్నాక పోలీసులు మరింత కక్షతో తమపై దాడిని తీవ్రతరం చేశారని బాధితులు వెల్లడించారు.
భారతదేశంలో పత్రికా స్వేచ్ఛపై వేధింపులు నానాటికీ తీవ్రమవుతున్న తరుణంలో ఈ దాడి చోటుచేసుకుంది. విమర్శనాత్మక కథనాలు, పరిశోధనాత్మక జర్నలిజం, ఉన్నతాధికారులు-రాజకీయ ప్రముఖులను ప్రశ్నించే ధోరణిపై చట్టపరమైన, భౌతికపరమైన బెదిరింపులు పెరిగిపోతున్నాయి. ఈ ఘటనపై తక్షణమే స్వతంత్ర దర్యాప్తు జరిపించాలని, నిందితులైన పోలీసు సిబ్బందిని విధుల నుంచి సస్పెండ్ చేసి క్రిమినల్ చర్యలు తీసుకోవాలని, అలాగే క్షేత్రస్థాయిలో పనిచేసే జర్నలిస్టులకు సంస్థాగత రక్షణ కల్పించాలని ఆంధ్రప్రదేశ్ మధ్య తరహా, చిన్న దినపత్రికలు , పీరియాడికల్స్ పాత్రికేయుల సంఘం” డిమాండ్ చేస్తోంది.
