Wasteful Government Spending on Meetings and Welfare Distributions
India’s democratic system was established for the welfare and advancement of its people. However, the highly irresponsible manner in which many state governments are currently spending public funds—derived from the hard-earned money of the citizens—has drawn sharp criticism. Despite the availability of modern technology and alternative digital channels, there is widespread concern over the depletion of the public exchequer to fund outdated, ostentatious displays.
Spending Crores on Meetings Despite the Availability of Online Alternatives
The world has embraced digitalization. Technology now allows for reviews with officials, high-level meetings, and administrative discussions to be conducted in minutes via video conferencing or online platforms, from any location. This approach could entirely eliminate significant expenses related to travel, allowances, and accommodation.
Nevertheless, state governments continue to squander public funds on reviews held in five-star hotels, luxury resorts, or elaborate, large-scale tent setups, alongside extravagant transportation arrangements. This raises a fundamental question: is it justifiable to spend taxpayer money on such lavish and unnecessary displays?
Why the Need for Grandiose Events When Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) Exists? The situation is much the same when it comes to the distribution of welfare schemes. Thanks to the technology implemented by the central and state governments, the **Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT)** system—which deposits funds directly into the bank accounts of beneficiaries—operates with a high degree of transparency. It ensures that funds reach the poor directly, without the involvement of middlemen or any leakage.
Despite the existence of this mechanism for direct transfers, governments continue to organize large-scale public meetings. They squander a significant portion of the funds allocated for these welfare schemes on mobilizing crowds—arranging hundreds of buses, erecting massive stages, and orchestrating elaborate publicity campaigns. It is appalling to see public wealth being poured out like water, solely for the sake of political mileage and the self-promotion of leaders.
Governments should act as custodians of public wealth, not as entities that plunder the exchequer. They must fully leverage digital technology and put an end to such unnecessary expenditures. When robust systems like online meetings and Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) are already in place, wasting public funds on such gatherings is a betrayal of the people’s trust. It is high time for citizens and intellectuals to question this malpractice and demand responsible governanc
