‘Free and Fair’ Elections on the Altar of Democracy
In India’s democratic system, elections should be a sacred process—a true reflection of the people’s aspirations. Whether for local bodies, state legislative assemblies, or the national Parliament, the process by which citizens elect their representatives through their right to vote must be entirely transparent. However, an examination of the recent local body elections reveals a dark shadow cast over democracy. Why should an ordinary citizen feel afraid to go and cast their vote? Why are polling agents being assaulted? Why are nomination papers being set on fire? These questions weigh heavily on everyone’s mind today.
An Atmosphere of Terror – Why Should Citizens and Polling Agents Live in Fear?
On election day, a polling booth should stand as a symbol of the people’s rights. Yet, in many instances during the recent local elections, these booths became sites of terror. Incidents involving the intimidation of voters and independent polling agents, along with acts of physical violence, pose a grave threat to the very survival of democracy.
Polling agents serve as a safeguard—a protective barrier—ensuring transparency in the electoral process. The fact that they are being driven out of polling booths or subjected to physical attacks speaks volumes about the extent to which political parties—both in power and in the opposition—are willing to rely on brute force. This conspiracy—which prevents ordinary voters from exercising their rights freely and forces them to stay home out of fear—completely undermines the sanctity of the electoral process.
Chaos during the nomination phase – destruction of documents and obstruction.
Rigging begins long before the actual day of polling; it starts as early as the nomination process. In recent local body elections, we witnessed shocking incidents, such as the tearing and burning of nomination papers, and the physical obstruction of rival candidates to prevent them from reaching the offices of the returning officers.
Coercion under the guise of ‘unanimous’ elections- by threatening opponents and forcing them to withdraw their nominations, perpetrators create a fabricated atmosphere of victory well before the elections even take place.
Systemic failure-
the disappearance of nomination papers and the arbitrary rejection of documents by officials—under pressure from the ruling party—strike at the very foundations of democracy.
The deplorable commodification of the vote- the distribution of gifts and cash.
From local body elections to parliamentary polls, the electoral process has effectively devolved into the distribution of money, liquor, and expensive gifts. Both ruling and opposition parties are spending vast sums of money to entice and influence voters. Instead of focusing on resolving public issues and an agenda for development, a culture has taken root where votes are treated as commodities to be purchased. It is a delusion to expect that leaders who spend thousands of crores to win elections will remain accountable to the people. This reflects how political parties exploit the vulnerabilities of the common man—who struggles with poverty—for their own selfish interests.
Shadows of doubt over vote counting and the security of ballot boxes
In the conduct of elections, the security of the equipment used, the proper sealing of ballot boxes, and a transparent vote-counting process are of paramount importance. However, instances such as the improper sealing of ballot boxes, concerns regarding the security of EVMs (Electronic Voting Machines), and sudden flare-ups of tension at counting centers cast doubt on the impartiality of the Election Commission. The perceived failure of the administrative machinery is eroding public trust in the democratic system.
Media bias – Silencing the truth
It is deeply concerning that the media—the fourth pillar of democracy—sometimes aligns itself with specific political parties during elections. Genuine issues—such as public grievances, unemployment, and local development—are sidelined, while the focus shifts entirely toward political vendettas and sensationalist propaganda. This biased approach risks preventing the truth from reaching the public and could lead voters astray.
The Responsibility to Protect Democracy
The recent local body elections have once again highlighted the threats facing our nation’s electoral system. Elections conducted under the shadow of fear, or influenced by money and brute force, can never foster a genuine democracy. Public fear can only be dispelled if the Election Commission acts with greater firmness and takes impartial action against those who commit wrongdoing. For the right to vote to become a truly effective instrument, every citizen must become vigilant; the time has come to raise a collective voice against such lawless political practices.
