Digital Shackles…The Younger Generation Held Captive Behind Screens !
In today’s modern world, technology has made human life significantly easier. However, it is alarming that this very technology has turned into an addiction for the youth, pushing their futures into darkness. For the generation known as ‘Gen Z,’ the smartphone is not merely an essential item; it is a virtual world. From the moment they wake up until they go to sleep—and even while eating or walking—their fingers are constantly scrolling across the screen. There is no doubt that this excessive “screen time” is deeply detrimental to the youth.
The Illusion of “Just Five Minutes”
Reels, memes, short videos, and the constant barrage of notifications—all these are taking control of young minds. A young person might turn on their phone thinking, “I’ll just look at it for five minutes and put it aside,” yet hours pass without them being able to break free from that digital labyrinth.
Drifting Away from Real Life
While they may have hundreds of “virtual” friends on social media, they often lack a single real-life friend with whom they can share their joys and sorrows. A situation has arisen where they find no time to converse with family members sitting right beside them. Neglect of Education and Career
At a time when they should be studying and building their careers, young people are squandering their precious time chasing illusions like likes, comments, online gaming, and the metaverse.
Impact on Physical and Mental Health
Excessive screen time is not just consuming time; it is also eroding the health of the youth.
Mental Health Issues
By comparing themselves to the curated, artificial lifestyles of others on social media, young people are falling prey to severe stress, depression, and isolation.
Physical Decline
Sitting in one place for hours staring at screens has made issues like obesity, eye problems, insomnia, and back pain commonplace, even among the young.
In the past, iron chains were used to restrain criminals. Today, however, no lathi blows or iron shackles are needed to bind the youth; the “smart screens” in their hands are voluntarily turning them into captives!
Who Needs to Change?
Merely scolding young people is not enough to save them from this digital addiction; parents and educational institutions must also shoulder the responsibility. Families should set aside time for a ‘digital detox’—meaning, for a few hours each day, all family members should put away their phones and simply talk to one another. Young people should step out of the confines of indoor screens, head to the playing fields for physical sports, and spend time amidst nature.
Technology should not rule us; rather, we must control technology.

If the younger generation does not break free from the spell of smartphones and recognize the wonders and responsibilities of real life, we risk witnessing a future generation that is mechanical and devoid of creativity. Finally the choice lies with the youth, will they remain captives of the digital world, or will they emerge as victors in the real world? Hope they turn the tides and make informed choice and be victorious in real life.
