Is Asking Questions a Crime? This Is a Democracy Without Questions…
Over the past decade, the very act of asking questions has been criminalized. Successive governments have failed to make essential information available to the public. When citizens ask questions as part of their quest for knowledge, it is treated as a criminal offense. Numerous laws exist—yet they remain merely nominal. They claim to have enacted the Right to Information Act, prioritizing transparency and upholding the highest standards of governance; yet, conversely, they arrest those who share information at their disposal, using the Information Technology Act as a pretext. Alternatively, governments subject such individuals or organizations to various forms of coercion. At the same time, government leaders grant access—at all times and under all circumstances—only to traditional media outlets and social media platforms that are favorable to them. Governments refuse to make even official information available to those perceived as likely to express views contrary to their own.
Prime Ministers and Chief Ministers do not hold press conferences. They grant access to only a select few media personnel. The situation in our country is aptly described by the adage: “Great in name, but hollow in substance.” In name, we are the world’s largest democracy; yet, we do not permit questions to be asked. We offer no response to anyone who raises questions—whether within this state, across the nation, or abroad. Recently, during the Prime Minister’s fourth official visit, at a joint press conference held by the leaders of both nations, Prime Minister Modi walked away without answering questions posed by a journalist named Helle Ling. The Editors Guild has also expressed concern over the fact that, throughout his ten-year tenure as Prime Minister, he has not held a single press conference. This trend is clearly evident in various states as well.
A recent incident serves as proof that once the youth begin to question the status quo, they will not tolerate the current situation in the slightest. Inspired by remarks made by the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court regarding the youth, a new political party has emerged. Although it is a digitally-oriented party, the overwhelming response it received compelled every political party in the country to pause and engage in self-introspection. While the results of recent elections in Tamil Nadu have already signaled how rapidly the mindset of the youth is shifting, this audacious new party now appears poised to pose a fresh challenge to the established political order. A clear trend suggests that unless the pertinent questions they have raised regarding contemporary politics are answered, the youth will not hesitate to keep existing political parties far removed from the reins of power. Issues such as rising corruption, insecurity, and unemployment are fueling the growing dissatisfaction among the youth regarding the current political system.
The reality is now starkly evident: the irregularities and injustices plaguing the electoral process; The youth will not indefinitely tolerate the silence of political parties regarding these issues—nor will they remain passive spectators in the face of the rampant party defections and internal rebellions that persist, despite the existence of laws designed to curb them. Regrettably, those laws have remained unimplemented.
