The ‘Placement’ Illusion of Engineering Colleges – A Tearful Reality!

Every year, as the admission season arrives, major city intersections become filled with colorful flex banners and hoardings from engineering colleges. Advertisements proclaiming “100% Placement Guaranteed!” in bold letters, alongside photos of the few students who secured multi-crore salary packages, capture everyone’s attention. For middle-class parents and students, these are not merely advertisements; they represent a reliable promise from the colleges regarding the return on the massive investment and four years of hard work they have put in.

However, after paying lakhs of rupees in fees and completing their education, the moment they step out with their degree certificates, that colorful world vanishes instantly. The bitter reality facing thousands of young graduates turns out to be starkly different.

The Reality of Colleges – Deception Behind Hopes
The gap between the promises colleges make during admissions and the dismal situation they present after the course ends is widening by the day. Today, in the majority of Tier-2 and Tier-3 colleges, the ‘Placement Cell’ has ceased to be a department that shapes students’ futures; instead, it has morphed into a mere marketing tool to boost admissions, ultimately becoming a curse for young graduates.

The Illusion of 100% Placements:
Many educational institutions fabricate these statistics. Third-party consultancies, unpaid internships, or jobs unrelated to the core subject are often passed off as placements. The salaries offered in such roles are insufficient even to cover the EMIs on the education loans students have taken out.

Shifting the Blame to Students:
If campus drives dwindle or major companies fail to visit, the placement cell changes its tune. The very management that promised guaranteed employment shifts the blame onto the students when the time comes, citing a “lack of skills” or a “market slowdown.” Colleges are concealing the truth. They fail to teach industry-relevant skills while students are still studying; college managements need to prioritize students’ interests and impart the necessary skills.

Fading Support:
Once students step out of the college gates, the management ceases to care about them. Emails go unanswered, and placement cells often react with irritation to WhatsApp messages. Students are left to struggle alone in a chaotic job market.

Blow to Social Trust:
The higher education system in our country operates on an ethical social contract. Parents often invest their life savings or even mortgage their assets to fund their children’s engineering education. When colleges betray this trust, the issue extends far beyond mere unemployment; it leads to severe mental anxiety and despair among an entire generation of youth.

We are sending young people out into society burdened with massive debt and no clarity about their future. Is it fair for placement cells—which open their doors wide during admissions—to shut their shutters just when students are ready to launch their careers?

What are the solutions?
The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and universities must immediately address this deceptive trend:

1. Authentic Data Auditing:
Colleges should have their placement records audited by third-party agencies and publish them on their websites. It should be made mandatory to transparently disclose not just the highest salary packages, but also the median salary and full details of the recruiting companies.

2. Action Against Misleading Advertisements:
Strict penalties must be imposed on educational institutions that display “100% Job Guarantee” signs without having any actual industrial tie-ups.

3. Curriculum Changes:
If students lack the skills required by the market, the fault lies with the college’s educational system, not solely with the students. Colleges must take full responsibility for their academic standards.

Engineering colleges should not remain mere business hubs that simply print degrees. When colleges possess the confidence to sell a dream to secure admissions, they also bear the moral responsibility of turning that dream into reality by the time the student completes their education. A degree lacking direction and an unfulfilled promise cause serious harm to society.
