- * Palnadu District’s First General Body Meeting Held Grandly
Rajadhani News, Narasaraopet, October 11:
The first general body meeting of the Palnadu District unit was held with great grandeur at the Indian Medical Association (IMA) Hall in Narasaraopet, under the aegis of the Andhra Pradesh Working Journalists Federation (APWJF) and the Andhra Pradesh Broadcast Journalists Association (APBJA).
Narasaraopet Member of Parliament (MP) Lavu Sri Krishna Devarayalu attended the event as the chief guest and offered valuable guidance regarding the issues faced by journalists. Speaking at the meeting, MP Lavu Sri Krishna Devarayalu affirmed his unwavering support for the welfare of journalists and the resolution of their legitimate grievances. He assured the gathering that he would sincerely strive to bring demands—such as land allocation for a local press club, housing sites for journalists, and pension provisions—to the government’s attention and work towards their resolution.
He also suggested that journalists’ associations should engage in self-auditing. He emphasized that unions should encourage journalists who work with responsibility and commitment and uphold professional values and ethical standards, noting that condoning wrongdoing in any field is not the right approach.
Another chief guest Mr. G.V. Anjaneyulu who is a Government Chief Whip emphasized the importance of providing accident insurance coverage for journalists, who work tirelessly to gather news and attend public events. He assured his support in ensuring that eligible journalists receive housing plots and pensions, promising to bring this matter to the Chief Minister’s attention for resolution.
Local MLA Dr. Chadalavada Aravinda Babu pledged his cooperation regarding the establishment of a press club and the provision of housing plots and pensions to eligible journalists. He lauded the commendable work being done by the local journalists who are bringing people’s problems to the forefront and to help resolve.
Addressing the gathering, APWJF State General Secretary G. Anjaneyulu highlighted several critical issues currently facing journalists. He stated that the profession of journalism is in jeopardy following the repeal of two key laws: the Working Journalists Act and the Wages Board Act. He further noted that the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 (DPDP Act)—introduced by the Central Government in the name of digital privacy and protection—is undermining the true spirit of the Right to Information Act (RTI Act, 2005).
He demanded that the Central and State governments—either jointly or independently—establish a ‘Media Commission’ to study the issues faced by journalists, media organizations, and media owners, people, politicians. This commission should formulate regulations that safeguard the interests of all stakeholders. He stated that this measure would help curb the dissemination of false narratives there by benefiting media organizations, journalists, public representatives, and the general public alike.
Speaking on this platform, P. Hussain Khan, President of the Andhra Pradesh Medium and Small Daily Newspapers and Periodicals Journalists’ Association (APMSDPJA), highlighted a comprehensive set of ten demands aimed at the welfare and development of medium and small-scale newspapers after inaugurating association logo.
Key Demands:
1. Establishment of a Special Corporation: The state government should establish a dedicated corporation to safeguard the interests of medium and small daily newspapers and other periodicals, and to provide financial loan assistance for infrastructure development and the expansion of operations.
2. Share in Government Advertisements: In accordance with the earlier assurance given by Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu, it should be made mandatory to allocate a 30% share of government advertisements to medium and small daily newspapers and other periodicals.
3. Online Bill Submission: An online bill submission system—aligned with the national-level CBC policy—should be introduced to prevent delays in payment processing and to save the publishers’ time and effort.
4. Online Publication Verification: Instead of the current procedure followed by the I&PR Department, a national-level PRGI-style system should be implemented, wherein published newspapers are uploaded online for verification.
5. Biannual Empanelment: The empanelment process for newspapers must be conducted twice a year; this should also include monthly, fortnightly, and weekly publications.
6. Adequate Media Representation: Appropriate representation must be provided to medium and small newspapers in the coverage of significant state-level events and VIP tours.
7. Pensions for Senior Journalists: Pensions should be sanctioned for senior journalists who have served in medium and small daily newspapers and periodicals (weeklies, fortnightlies, and monthlies).
8. Accident Insurance Coverage: Comprehensive accident insurance coverage must be provided to all journalists working for these publications.
9. Skill Development & Training: Suitable training programs should be organized to enable journalists from small newspapers to adapt to the evolving media landscape.
10. Representation in the Media Academy: We request official representation for APMSDPJA on the governing council of the Media Academy, which conducts refresher courses for journalists.
On behalf of the association, a request was made for the government to formulate a concrete plan to address all these issues and to immediately convene a meeting with the concerned officials.
Speaking on the occasion, Kalimishri, Secretary of the Andhra Pradesh Medium and Small Daily Periodicals Journalists Association, stated that the Andhra Pradesh Working Journalists Federation plays a pivotal role in fighting for the issues faced by journalists across the state. He stated that, as a result of the Federation’s struggles, they have successfully resolved nearly six of the eleven issues identified during ‘Federation Demands Day.’ He noted that, inspired by the state leadership, Palnadu district leaders are fighting for and achieving results on various local issues, and urged the newly elected leadership to move forward with that same spirit.
During this general body meeting, the new executive committee for the Palnadu district APWJF was elected unanimously. Pachava Bujji Babu was elected as the Palnadu District President, and Achanta Krishna Kumar was elected as Secretary, along with other members.
