Statewide protests against this attitude undermining media freedom…
The Andhra Pradesh Working Journalists Federation and the Andhra Pradesh Broadcast Journalists Association have jointly called upon the Federation’s district units across the state to stage protests against the conduct of the police, who resorted to attacking journalists while they were performing their duties in New Delhi.
The conduct of the police is condemnable; they attempted to detain and impose restrictions on journalists who had gone—or were on their way—to report on the protests at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi, where teachers, writers, trade union leaders, and members of various opposition parties had gathered to question irregularities in the voters’ list.
Despite being informed that they were media personnel, the police detained several journalists at various locations in New Delhi and behaved rudely towards them.
The Federation calls upon all its district units across the state to register their protest against this attitude that undermines media freedom. It also appeals to all journalist unions, as well as proponents of democracy, to participate in this protest. S. Venkatrao, President
