Rajadhani Vartalu Editorial –
Abandoning Governance for Business?
In a democracy, the primary duty of a government is to ensure the protection , welfare of its citizens and to provide effective governance. However, as times change, so do the priorities of those in power. Instead of focusing on public welfare and the rule of law, governments today are increasingly adopting a commercial mindset, veering toward business activities. This shift—from “governance” to “doing business”—undermines the very spirit of democracy.
A Trend Leading to Governance Failure
When governments begin to weigh their actions in terms of profit and loss—much like a commercial enterprise—the lives of ordinary citizens become burdened. Essential sectors such as education, healthcare, transportation, electricity, and infrastructure should be centered on public welfare. If these are transformed into commodities and managed with a corporate-style, profit-driven approach, the government effectively distances itself from the poor and the middle class. Furthermore, when a government becomes deeply engrossed in business, its role as a regulator is inevitably weakened. If the very system tasked with protecting the rights of the people enters the commercial arena as a competitor, where can the common person turn for justice?
Governments Should Foster Business, Not Engage in It
Conducting business is the domain of the private sector. It is the government’s responsibility to create a favorable environment for entrepreneurs, establish transparent policies, and attract investment by simplifying regulations—an approach often referred to as ‘Ease of Doing Business.’ Conversely, when the government itself engages in commercial activities or attempts to run public institutions with a focus on profit—competing with private monopolies—the core objective of ‘governance’ is sidelined.
**Balancing Welfare and Development**
Rather than spending public funds on commercial ventures, the government should invest in foundational areas such as infrastructure, quality education, better healthcare, and the maintenance of law and order. When those in power prioritize increasing revenue and commercial gain over addressing the problems faced by the people, the true values of democracy begin to fade.
Governments should not act as business entities; they must serve as guardians of the public. A government elected by the people and for the people can only foster societal progress when it governs with the goal of public welfare, rather than a pursuit of profit. Business is the domain of private enterprises and the market, while the government’s role and responsibility lie in providing assurance and stability. Good governance is possible only when a clear distinction is drawn between these two spheres. Let us hope that both the central and state governments move in this direction.
