The social significance of the month of Ramadan
Some form of fasting is present in almost all religions of the world.
Roja or Fasting in Islam:
Roja or fasting in Islam is an elaborate process that takes place during one lunar month (Ramadan) every year. A roza or fasting person does not eat, drink or smoke from sunrise to sunset. During the month of Ramadan a person not only abstains from eating and drinking but also gets into a sublime state of mind to cultivate positive feelings. To achieve this, one must restrain oneself from hearing, speaking, or thinking negatively about others.
The month of Ramadan is considered to be the month in which the Holy Quran was revealed. Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) received his first revelation in the month of Ramadan. The Holy Qur’an says: “O you who believe! Fasting has been enjoined on you as it was enjoined on your forefathers – so that fear may be born in you.” (2:183).
Fasting is also an elaborate process of self-purification. If this self-purification process is followed for a period of one month, its effect will remain for the remaining 11 months, after which the process will be repeated.
Social Significance:
Sociologically speaking, fasting is a sign of solidarity with the poor. Expresses the feeling of generosity, friendliness and hospitality. Fasting purifies the body and soul and transforms human beings into ideal human beings.
Philanthropy:
Charity also includes helping the poor. It is said that if you donate even a small amount in this month, you will get 70 times more merit. A Muslim is mandated to count his personal wealth both cash and goods and take 2.5% @ ‘Zakat’ for distribution among the poor. In return, Muslims believe that God will protect their wealth and property. Zakat is a wonderful scheme to bring about social justice. If the rich practice it with full sincerity, the poor will get financial help.
Neighborhood concept:
The concept of neighbor is very important in Islam. It has a wide range of meanings. The Prophet (PBUH) said, “One should treat all mankind with courtesy and foremost among them is your neighbor.” A true Muslim cannot see any human being hungry, which means continuing the fast without eating the next day, even if the ‘Iftar’ sacrifice is required. A true Muslim cannot see a human being in pain. Islam especially ‘Roja’ teaches a person to address human concerns and values.
Hospitality:
The Prophet (SW) said about hospitality: “God forgives the sins of those who rejoice at the patter of a guest’s feet”. Since Muslims strive to practice good things to seek forgiveness from God, there is no better motivation to achieve that than fasting.
Cultivating the habit of speaking the truth:
One of the great benefits of Ramadan fasting is that fasting is believed to increase the habit of speaking the truth in a person. In God’s creation the path of the righteous is accepted as the path of truth.” The Prophet (PBUH) said: “Tell the truth, it may be bitter or distasteful to the people.
Honesty is an important characteristic of every Muslim. If a person fasts, speaks the truth, practices hospitality and neighborliness, and does charity, he/she becomes not only an ideal human being (insan), but also worthy of God’s blessings and protection. Muslims should demonstrate the relevance of Islam in today’s world by observing ‘Roja’.

ఇస్లాంలో రోజా లేదా ఉపవాసం:
ఇస్లాంలో రోజా లేదా ఉపవాసం అనేది ప్రతి సంవత్సరం ఒక చాంద్రమాన నెల(రంజాన్) వ్యవధిలో జరిగే విస్తృతమైన ప్రక్రియ. రోజా లేదా ఉపవాసం ఉన్న వ్యక్తి సూర్యోదయం నుండి సూర్యాస్తమయం వరకు వ్యక్తి తినడు, త్రాగడు లేదా పొగ త్రాగడు. రంజాన్ నెలలో ఒక వ్యక్తి తినడం మరియు త్రాగడం నుండి సంయమనం పాటించడమే కాకుండా సానుకూల భావాలను పెంపొందించడానికి ఉత్కృష్టమైన మానసిక స్థితికి కూడా వస్తాడు. దీనిని సాధించడానికి, ఇతరుల గురించి చేడుగా వినడం, మాట్లాడటం, లేదా ప్రతికూలంగా ఆలోచించడం నుండి తనను తాను నిగ్రహించుకోవాలి.
దివ్య ఖురాన్ అవతరించిన నెలగా రంజాన్ నెల పరిగణించబడుతుంది. ప్రవక్త ముహమ్మద్ (స) రంజాన్ మాసంలో మొదటి ద్యోతకం పొందారు.దివ్య ఖురాన్ ఇలా చెబుతోంది:”ఓ విశ్వాసులారా! మీ పూర్వీకులపై ఉపవాసం విధించబడినట్లే మీ పై కూడా విదిoపబడినది -తద్వారా మీలో భయభక్తులు జనించే అవకాసం ఉంది.” (2:183).
ఉపవాసం, స్వీయ-శుద్ధి యొక్క విస్తృతమైన ప్రక్రియ కూడా. ఒక నెల వ్యవధిలో ఈ స్వీయ-శుద్దీకరణ ప్రక్రియను పాటిస్తే దాని ప్రభావం మిగిలిన 11 నెలల వరకు ఉంటుంది, ఆ తర్వాత ఈ ప్రక్రియ పునరావృతమవుతుంది.
సామాజిక ప్రాముఖ్యత:
సామాజిక శాస్త్రపరంగా చూస్తే, ఉపవాసం అనేది పేదలపట్ల సంఘీభావాన్ని తెలియజేస్తుంది. దాతృత్వం, పరిసరాలు మరియు ఆతిథ్యం అనే భావనను వ్యక్తపరుస్తుంది. ఉపవాసం శరీరం మరియు ఆత్మను శుద్ధి చేయడంలోపాటు మానవులను ఆదర్శ మానవులుగా మారుస్తుంది.
దాతృత్వం:
దాతృత్వంలో పేదలకు సహాయం చేయడం కూడా ఉంటుంది. ఈ మాసంలో చిన్నమొత్తమైనా దానం చేస్తే 70 రెట్లు ఎక్కువ పుణ్యఫలం లభిస్తుందని చెబుతారు. ఒక ముస్లిం తన వ్యక్తిగత సంపదను నగదు మరియు వస్తువులు రెండింటినీ లెక్కించి, పేదలు మధ్య పంపిణీకి 2.5% @ ‘జకాత్’గా తీయాలని ఆదేశం. ప్రతిఫలంగా దేవుడు తన సంపద మరియు ఆస్తిని కాపాడతాడని ముస్లిములు భావిస్తున్నారు. జకాత్ సామాజిక న్యాయం తీసుకురావడానికి ఎంత అద్భుతమైన పథకం. ధనవంతులు దీనిని పూర్తి చిత్తశుద్ధితో ఆచరిస్తే, నిరుపేదలకు ఆర్ధిక సహాయం లబిస్తుంది.
పొరుగు భావన:
ఇస్లాం లో పొరుగు భావన చాలా ముఖ్యమైనది. ఇది విస్తృత అర్థాలను కలిగి ఉంది. ప్రవక్త(స) ఇలా అన్నారు, “ఒకరు మొత్తం మానవాళితో మర్యాదగా ప్రవర్తించాలి మరియు వారిలో ప్రధానమైనది మీ పొరుగువారు.” నిజమైన ముస్లిం ఏ మానవుని ఆకలితో చూడలేడు, అంటే ‘ఇఫ్తార్’ త్యాగం చేయవలసి వచ్చినప్పటికీ, మరుసటి రోజు ఆహారం తీసుకోకుండా ఉపవాసం కొనసాగించడం. నిజమైన ముస్లిం మానవుడిని బాధలో చూడలేడు. ఇస్లాం ముఖ్యంగా ‘రోజా’ ఒక వ్యక్తికి మానవ ఆందోళనలు మరియు విలువలను పరిష్కరించడo బోధిస్తుంది.
ఆతిథ్య భావన:
ఆతిథ్యం గురించిన ప్రవక్త (SW) ఇలా అన్నారు: “అతిథి పాదాల చప్పుడు విని సంతోషించే వారి పాపాలను దేవుడు క్షమిస్తాడు”. ముస్లింలు దేవుని నుండి క్షమాపణ పొందేందుకు మంచి విషయాలను ఆచరించడానికి ప్రయత్నిస్తారు కాబట్టి, దానిని సాధించడానికి ఉపవాసం కంటే మెరుగైన ప్రేరణ మరొకటి ఉండదు.
నిజం మాట్లాడే అలవాటును అలవర్చుకోవడం:
రంజాన్ ఉపవాసం యొక్క గొప్ప ప్రయోజనాల్లో ఒకటి ఏమిటంటే, ఉపవాసం ఒక వ్యక్తిలో నిజం మాట్లాడే అలవాటును పెంచుతుందని భావిస్తున్నారు. భగవంతుని సృష్టిలో నీతిమంతుల మార్గము సత్యమార్గమని అంగీకరించబడింది.” ప్రవక్త (స) ఇలా అన్నారు: “వాస్తవమే చెప్పండి, అది ప్రజలకు చేదుగా లేదా అసహ్యంగా ఉండవచ్చు.
నిజాయితీ ప్రతి ముస్లిం యొక్క ముఖ్యమైన లక్షణం. ఒక వ్యక్తి ఉపావాసం ఉండి నిజం మాట్లాడి, ఆతిథ్యం మరియు పొరుగువారి భావనను ఆచరించి, దానధర్మాలు చేస్తే, అతను/ఆమె ఆదర్శ మానవుడు (ఇన్సాన్) మాత్రమే కాదు, దేవుని ఆశీర్వాదాలు మరియు రక్షణ కు అర్హులు అవుతారు. నేటి ప్రపంచంలో ఇస్లాం యొక్క ఔచిత్యాన్ని ‘రోజా’ పాటించడం ద్వారా ముస్లింలు ప్రదర్శించాలి.
