If everyone becomes a journalist, it will create problems for everyone: Supreme Court’s significant remarks
New Delhi, October 16, 2026:
The Supreme Court of India has orally remarked that if every citizen were to claim to be a journalist by invoking their right to freedom of expression, it would lead to serious problems for everyone. The apex court made these significant observations while hearing petitions concerning the impact of social media in the digital age, mobile journalism, and the protection of reporters during protests.
A bench comprising the Chief Justice of India (CJI) and Justice Joymalya Bagchi heard the matter. During the proceedings, the Court stated, “If everyone becomes a journalist, it creates problems for everyone.” The Court observed that in the current era, it is becoming increasingly difficult to distinguish between officially accredited journalists, those working for registered media organizations, freelancers, social media influencers, and creators of short-form videos (reels).
It was discussed in court that with the rise of digital technology and the ubiquity of smartphones, some individuals are labeling themselves as “independent journalists” solely for the sake of gaining popularity or creating content like “reels.” The Supreme Court has clarified that specific categorizations and thorough scrutiny are necessary to protect genuine journalists and to identify reporters who possess the appropriate qualifications.
The bench stated that there is a need for an in-depth examination regarding the protection of journalists and the boundaries of freedom of expression.
