‘Sir Syed Day’ Celebrated Grandly Every Year on October 17 – A Symbol of Modern Education and Scientific Temper
Rajadhani Vartalu, Amaravati, AP:
‘Sir Syed Day’ is celebrated with great grandeur every year on October 17 to mark the birth anniversary of Sir Syed Ahmed Khan—a prominent social reformer, educationist, and the founder of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU)—who initiated revolutionary changes in Indian society, particularly in the field of education.
Born on October 17, 1817, Sir Syed Ahmed Khan opposed the superstitions and regressive traditions that were deeply rooted in the society of his time. Firmly believing that modern scientific education and rational thinking were essential for the progress of the Muslim community and the nation at large, he laid the foundation for the ‘Muhammadan Anglo-Oriental College’ (now Aligarh Muslim University) in 1875.
Global Celebrations:
Every year on October 17, the day is celebrated with great enthusiasm—not only at the main campus of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) but also by millions of AMU alumni and various associations across the globe. Special prayers (Quran Khwani) are held at the main campus, along with the offering of a ceremonial cloth (Chadar-poshi) at the tomb of Sir Syed. The occasion also features the presentation of prestigious awards and the hosting of national-level debates. Furthermore, alumni gather in major cities across India, as well as in Dubai, the United States, and various Gulf countries, to commemorate his vision and ideals.
On this significant day—observed annually on October 17th—prominent figures urge the youth to follow the path of knowledge and the spirit of religious harmony championed by Sir Syed Ahmed Khan, and to contribute toward the development of the nation.
