The number of annual cancer cases in India doubled between the years 1990 and 2013. Cancer is growing unabated in India. It is expected to increase by 12 % and the number of annual cancer cases by the year 2025, which would be around 1.57 million.
About 1 in 5 people develop cancer in their lifetime, and roughly 1 in 9 men and 1 in 12 women die from the disease. once it was rare.
India’s rank in Cancer
Researchers found that India, along with China and Japan, are the three leading countries in Asia in terms of number of new cases and deaths.
In 2022, there were an estimated 20 million new cancer cases and 9.7 million deaths. The estimated number of people who were alive within 5 years following a cancer diagnosis was 53.5 million.
the report, which was released on World Health Day 2024 on April 7, revealed that 14 lakh people in India had cancer in 2020, and the number is expected to rise to 15.7 lakh by 2025.
Three deadliest Cancers
According to the World Health Organization, the three cancers that killed the most people worldwide in 2020 were lung cancer (1.8 million deaths), colorectal cancer (916,000 deaths) and liver cancer (830,000 deaths). And prostate cancer and breast cancer are among the most common types of cancer.

The number has now reached 73,536 cases in 2022, as per the national cancer registry. The cases are increasing with each passing year posing a big threat to patients and the government.
Financial burden – out of pocket expenditure.
A total of 12,148 cancer patients were recruited at seven purposively selected cancer centres in India, to assess the out-of-pocket expenditure (OOPE) and financial toxicity among cancer patients.
Mean direct OOPE per outpatient consultation and per episode of hospitalization was estimated as ₹8,053 (US$ 101) and ₹39,085 (US$ 492) respectively. Per patient annual direct OOPE incurred on cancer treatment was estimated as ₹331,177 (US$ 4,171). Diagnostics (36.4%) and medicines (45%) are major contributors of OOPE for outpatient treatment and hospitalization, respectively.
