Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu has proposed a semi high-speed circular suburban rail network aimed at improving connectivity and easing traffic congestion in the capital region. The government has begun preparatory work for the circular rail project connecting major urban centers including Vijayawada, Namburu, Amaravati, Guntur and Tenali, forming a loop that enhances regional transit infrastructure.
sources said that the proposed key stations on the circular suburban rail line are Vijayawada (PNBS Station), Krishna Canal, Pedavadlapudi, Chiluvuru, Duggirala, Kolakaluru, Tenali, Sangam, Vejendla, Old Guntur, Guntur, Koritepadu, Hindu College Hostel, Guntur City, MG Inner Ring Road, Auto Nagar, Namburu, Kaza, Mangalagiri, Tadikonda and Peddaparimi.
To take the project forward, the state Metro Rail Corporation (APMRC) has been directed to collaborate with the Urban Mass Transit Company (UMTC) to prepare a Detailed Project Report. The proposal covers urban centers under the Andhra Pradesh capital region development authority (APCRDA), including the Krishna Canal, Duggirala, Tenali, Vejendla, Mangalagiri, Sattenapalli, Nuzvid, Gudivada and Gannavaram.
Currently, passenger trains between Guntur and Vijayawada cover the 32.17km distance in approximately 1 hour 20 minutes, while express trains take about an hour. The Howrah–Chennai East Coast Corridor remains heavily congested, with only a few branch line trains operating slowly due to mixed traffic conditions.
Official sources said, “Recognizing that conventional fast passenger train services are not feasible around Amaravati, the state government feels a semi high-speed suburban rail system is essential for regional development.
The Railway Ministry has given in-principle approval for the project, which will be implemented under the Suburban Railway Policy-2017 as a joint venture between the central and state governments.”
It does help in estalishing and promoting local businesses and trade with other regions of the state and the centre.
